Russian Mini-Sub trapped at bottom
of Pacific- Rescue underway
(05.08.2005)
A Russian deep sea diving mini-sub (also known as a bathyscaph)
has become entangled with some objects at the bottom of the Pacific,
just off Russia's Eastern coast.
The craft is apparently stuck approximately 600 feet below the
surface and may be caught up with a cable or old fishing net.
The seven members of the crew are alive and well and have sufficient
air and food to survive until Monday or Tuesday of next week.
A
number of ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet are involved in the
rescue and another craft, similar to the one trapped, will be inspecting
the situation.
Hopefully, the rescue of this mini-sub will be much easier than
that of the Kursk, which sank around 5 years ago following an explosion.
The Kursk tragedy resulted in the death of 118 crew. Russia received
considerable criticism for the way they handled that particual incident
and we feel sure that they will make every attempt to avoid repeating
this mistake.
