Russian Mini-Sub crew running low
on oxygen
(06.08.2005)
As rescuers from countries like the U.S., Britain and Japan race
to help the trapped Russian Mini-Sub and its seven crew, their
oxygen supplies are getting dangerously low.
According to some reports, the crew have enough air for today
and maybe a little longer if they are careful, although initial information
indicated that they should have sufficient to last until Monday or
Tuesday (at the latest).
The
Mini-Sub is apparently caught up with an underwater antenna (part
of a coastal surveillance system) and this is secured by an anchor
weighing 60 tons.
There are plans to blow the anchor up, but this of course has
its risks. Underwater robots known as Super Scorpios should now also
be at the scene.
If all goes well, the trapped Mini-Sub should be freed in a few
more hours, but if this latest attempt fails an alternative will be
cutting things a little fine.
