17 Spanish troops believed dead
in NATO forces helicopter crash in Afghanistan
(16.08.2005)
Reports indicate that 17 Spanish troops have been killed following
a helicopter crash in afghanistan.
Two NATO forces Puma helicopters
were
involved in a training exercise, near the city of Herat, in western
Afghanistan, when it is believed that they encountered a sandstorm.
One made a forced landing, but the other crashed.
A spokesman for NATO said it was unlikely the helicopters had
come under attack and believed that it was an accident caused by a
mechanical failure.
A rescue mission is underway and an investigation into the crash
will be carried out later.
