Secretary has died, aged 55
(20.08.2005)
Former Northern Ireland Secretary, Mo Mowlam, one of the more
"colourful" members of politics, died at the age of 55 after
hitting her head in a fall.
Mo Mowlam played an important part in the peace process in Northern
Ireland and was famous for her informality.
She received tributes from many leading political figures. Tony
Blair called her "one of the most remarkable and colorful personalities
ever to come into politics. Great company, utterly irreverent, full
of life and fun"
Former U.S. President Clinton said her "persistence, toughness
and good humor were legendary"
Mo
Mowlam had suffered with a brain tumor for some years and apparently
was experiencing problems with her balance as a result of radiotherapy
treatments. It was reported that she had also hit her head in a fall
the previous month.
Unfortunately, like many other members in the Labour Party, she
did not agree with many of Blair's policies and was demoted in 1999.
She eventually decided to leave politics 2 years later.
