We are achieving "strategic
objectives" in Iraq says Bush
(24.08.2005)
With mounting pressure to withdraw the troops from Iraq, George
Bush has said that the U.S. is achieving its "strategic objectives"
It is unclear what achievements he is talking about, as the insurgents
are as strong now as they ever were (more so perhaps) and the democracy
he his so fond of talking about has yet to take any hold.
"The brutal violence in Iraq today is a clear sign of terrorists
trying to stop democracy from taking hold in the Middle East"
said Bush. But maybe it is
a
sign that some of the people there are also tired of all the killing
and see little difference between the way it is now and the way it
was before?
Bush plans to meet in private with families of soldiers killed
in Iraq and Afghanistan, but you can be fairly certain that all of
these families will have been screened prior to the meeting, just
in case there are any that share the same views as Cindy Sheehan,
who he still refuses to meet.
Bush has scheduled some quickly arranged meetings, where his speeches
have been directed at sympathetic audiences. This may please his loyal
supporters, but these are not the people he needs to convince that
the war in Iraq should continue.
