Iraq Parliament learn "democracy"
the Bush way
(28.08.2005)
Even though not all those involved in creating Iraq's draft constitution
agreed with the final version, it was presented to parliament anyway.
It seems that some members of the so called new "democracy"
growing in Iraq have learnt a few tricks from the Bush administration.
Bush has shown us many times that votes mean very little to him (John
Bolton's appointment to the UN is a good example of that) and if you
disagree with his thoughts, you just get brushed aside.
Sunni members of the constitution team rejected the final draft,
but Chairman of the drafting committee, Humam Hammoudi, offered his
congratulations to the Iraqi people saying that the constitution was
"written by Iraqi hands". Unfortunately, not by all
Iraqi hands it would seem.
The
democracy that Bush likes people to think is growing in Iraq, is nothing
more than a joke. The current parliament were put in power with votes
from barely a quarter of the whole population.
On the 15th of October there will be a referendum, so that Iraqi's
can decide on whether they want to accept the constitution document
or not. But if the last election is anything to go by, only a small
proportion of the voters will actually take part any way. And maybe
those who oppose it will probably be worried that the parliament has
also learnt how to win elections as well?
