Hurricane Katrina growing weaker
as it passes through Mississippi
(29.08.2005)
Hurricane Katrina hit parts of Louisiana and Mississippi when
it headed inland today, producing strong winds and heavy rain.
The storm has been downgraded to a Category 2 strength, but still
caused plenty of damage. The New Orleans Superdome had a piece of
its roof ripped off, where 10,000 people were sheltering at the time.
There have been no reports of flooding in New Orleans, but this
could change. New Orleans is situated below sea level and surrounded
on three sides by water.
Thankfully,
most of the almost half a million residents in New Orleans had already
evacuated, but this as usual leaves the homes and businesses a target
for looters. Governor Barbour has given instructions to law enforcement
agencies to treat looters "ruthlessly"
As Hurricane Katrina continues its journey, heavy rainfalls and
further flooding can be expected. There is also an increased threat
of tornados in parts of Mississippi, Alabama and western Florida.
