John Brogden resigns after "mail-order
bride" comment
(29.08.2005)
John Brogden has decided to resign as leader of the NSW Liberal
Party after comments he made in private, over a few beers, became
public.
Brogden made the mistake of describing Helena Carr, the Malaysian
born wife of the former New South Wales premier Bob Carr, as a "mail-order
bride"
Unfortunately
for John Brogden, a member of his own Liberal party gave the story
to a Canberra newspaper columnist and this was the beginning of the
end for his political future.
Alex Hawke, the national president of the Young Liberals, was
named by Brogden as the source of the "leak", but this accusation
is denied by Hawke. There have been ill feeling between the two since
Brogden called Hawke the "clown" inside the big ideological
tent that was the Liberal Party.
It would seem that this "clown" had the last laugh?
