PROOF READING AND COPY EDITING
If you are writing a letter in
English to a friend, or someone you know well, they
are fairly certain to be forgiving if you make the
odd mistake or two. But in business, one small error
can be much more costly and you don't get any second
chances!
As first impressions are everything,
it is extremely important to get things right from
the very beginning. We have visited many sites where
English is used as a second language, and whilst
it is clear that some have a good knowledge of the
English language, we still manage to find a few
errors. These are quite often the misuse of articles
and prepositions, but more usually an author's attempt
to "impress" their readers by randomly
picking out words from a dictionary. Unfortunately,
whilst some words have similar meanings, they don't
always fit into every sentence. The example below
may make this clearer:
The word "TAKE" has the
following meanings: grasp, seize, capture, steal,
win, transport, escort etc. However, you could not
use any of these to replace the word "take"
in the following wedding example: "Do you take
this woman to be your....."
Writing in English is one of the
hardest parts of the language, and to write in the
style of a Native English speaker is something that
takes many years to achieve (and even then only
a very small percentage manage to obtain this talent).
With this thought in mind, it is
probably far simpler (and safer) to let a Native
speaker do this for you. The cost is quite small
in comparison to the potential rewards and there
is no shame in asking for help with such a difficult
area of the language. Try not to let pride stand
in the way of profit.
