7.6 Magnitude Earthquake hits North
India and Pakistan border region
(08.10.2005)
Authorities
fear that the death toll will rise following a 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake
in the border area between North India and Pakistan (Kashmir region).
The very strong earthquake struck in the morning (local time)
and Pakistan have reported that hundreds have already been killed.
India have said nearly fifty have died so far with many more injured.
The quake, the biggest to strike the region, has destroyed many
buildings and many people are believed to be trapped in the debris.
Large aftershocks have been felt and these could increase the
danger of further losses and will make rescue attempts much more difficult.
These are expected to last a further 2 days.
The center of the earthquake is not too far away from the Chitral
region in Pakistan, which is believed to be the hiding spot for Osama
bin Laden, but it is not yet certain whether this area was badly affected
by the earthquake today.
This
area of the world has seen a number of large earthquakes recently,
especially around Sumatra, Indonesia and we believe that this trend
will not only continue, but get much worse.
Although we are not in a position to provide details just yet,
there is an event taking place at the moment that is almost certainly
contributing to these natural disasters and will also increase volcanic
activity as well (including changes to the weather). Please check
back again in the near future for further news on this.
