Russia gives Condoleezza Rice a "Nyet" to tougher action on Iran

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a special trip to Russia in the hope of persuading them to support the U.S. demands for tougher action on Iran's nuclear program, but had a wasted trip.

Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov made it clear that Russia does not believe that a harder line on Iran's nuclear program is the answer and was quoted as saying that the problem can be resolved "without referring this issue to other organizations".

The question of Iran's nuclear program will be discussed by the UN next month and the United States were hoping for Russian support on this. The official reason for putting pressure on Iran is to either force them back to talks or decide on a punishment.

Of course, the main purpose is for the Bush administration to get as many countries as possible to support the idea of taking stronger action, so that a military strike later will be easier to sell.

Unfortunately for Condoleezza Rice and the United States, Russia is not prepared to support their war games and has no intention of following the rest of the sheep in letting America bully its way around the world.

President Putin is quite happy to let Bush carry on doing what he is doing without any help from Russia. The longer the U.S. remain in the Middle East, the deeper they go into debt and the stronger Russia becomes.

Russia has a huge wealth of natural resources (and lots of oil!) and Putin probably cannot believe his luck that a small group of people connected to the government are pushing his country into the leading player status for him.

The United States are committing financial suicide with their present actions and will shortly pay a serious price for their mistakes, as will the countries that have been too weak to oppose the Bush administration.

But maybe it is time for a change? The question is, will the rest of the world like the idea of Russia being the new "top dog" with China as its partner?
